[ 920. Canada Day 6: Sidenotes from a Friend ]
Was blog surfing during lunch time (contrastly lunch was fantastic today) and found this on my friend's blog. Somewhat... he made sense, and i do share certain sentiments about the blog issue. Do you realize? Problems were never problems until someone made it out to be a problem.
"It has been a long week, of just plain stupid office work.
Talking about the army... No one should die in war. No one should die for his country. This is a stupid concept, and people think it's brave and courageous and patriotic, and what now. Just because they don't value the integrity of life. I mean, what makes the life of the uncle selling fruits opposite my house worth less than that of the president's life? God gave everyone a breath of life and thus a living spirit. It is utterly condescending to compare the worth of such a divine life based on worldly achievements.
But religion aside, I would protect my family, my friends, and if need be, die for them. I would die without regrets. But fight and die for the government just because they have the authority to force me to do it? It makes as much sense as the level of IQ of a turnip. The government has absolutely no right to rob 2 years of my life away (any many more years of re-service) for their own national interest, or what they think is the "best" way to prepare the country for peril.
Come to think of it, army has achieved its opposite effect in many people. It makes some Singaporeans think that the government is nothing but a bunch of self-assuming, bureaucratic pumpkins (pardon the frequent veg references!), and in fact, can't wait to leave the country after serving. I've met too many friends in the army who think like that. You see, NS may have worked (I say "may". Whether it worked out or not, is of much debate in itself) 20-30 years ago. But such an outdated policy has to be reviewed seriously. Hello! This is the 21st century, where brains are becoming bigger than arses (because I believe the opposite is true for the implementation of the policy decades ago), and people feel a greater need for freedom and self-expression.
One last thing, "The world is about to be destroyed! There's no point getting all annoyed!"
Taking this into consideration, the dolphins are undoubtedly smarter than us. =)
I couldn't JUST say army sucks. Saying that is just like saying Noah had a water problem.
Anyway, if you disagree, please kindly use the "X" button at the top right-hand corner of the IE window, and top left-hand corner of the Safari window.
Which reminds me of another point. ST should stop warning bloggers to exercise restrain when blogging, cuz a blog is a public medium. They CONVENIENTLY missed out the fact that although most blogs are public, they are also PERSONAL. If a blog manages to attract a million readers, either the content makes a lot of sense, or it's just funny. Why should we only listen to the PM? I choose what I read and what I write."
