[ 899. Granny ]
Just the last weekend, eric and i walked from the army market right to bugis, where we went past this house. This was where my granny stayed when i was really really young. Something like when i was 4, 5 years old, when back alleys still existed, and stray cats just went in and out of houses like no one's business. Or rather, we all took them like families.
This place brought back much fond childhood memories.
Looking at my grandmother's amputated toe, or rather, that space where the toe used to be, saddens me. It's one of those signs that she's aged a lot, a lot since i was young, a lot since those days when she used to ride the tricycle full of sugarcanes from her beach road home to the army market hawker center daily to operate her sugarcane juice stall. Those strong, powerful arms and legs of the grandmother has now reduced into weak limbs that could only stroll slowly and help out around at home. Well, after all, it's already been ten over years. Her legs aren't getting any better, you see sores, patches of internal blood clots everywhere. And well, aunts told me it's only a matter of timebefore diabetes claim her entire foot. I wonder how long can granny's optimism holds her. Suddenly, her loud nagging just cease to be a bother anymore. Suddenly, her food just taste so much more wonderful. Suddenly, she seems like a raw pearl, unrefined, yet so precious.
Each time i order a sugarcane juice, i remember those days where i spent my holidays at my grandmother's sugarcane juice stall.
