[ 871. Heritage Run ]
Haha. Finally got my subway fix this afternoon, after (not) much coaxing to weiming.
The ADSD heritage run was held today. Last night, in fact. So late, that when i woke up to fall in for the run, weiming was still doing his nightly reading by the stairs. In summary, this is a run from three different starting points for the three brigades, and covering a total distance of 20 or so kilometres, finally leading up back to the camp. I was unfortunately selected as one of the runners for DAB, 3DA, signals. not because i can run, but more because there is much of a choice left, and most importantly, i don't really have much of a choice either.
The run commenced at only 3am though we met at 1245am and left camp about half hour later. The route is disgusting longer than it seemed, and we ended up at this bus stop at holland rd. It was even further up towards ulu pandan, beyond holland village. Oh my gaaawwddd... so faaarrr.... Ok, never mind. And instead of starting at some supposed landmark, we started at a... bus stop. WOW! The land behind the bus stop was where the old camp lies, and so we were told. Hmmm. How interesting. Nonetheless, we were told that the first 9 legs of the race would be about 1 to 1.2km, and the tenth leg onwards would be about 50% longer. Dammit. I was the tenth runner. What luck. We ran... and ran... and ran...... and ran. and ran. and finally it's my turn.
So there i was being dropped off before the florida florist (or the likes of it) along marymount rd. For the road savvy people, it's the spot some 200m before you turn down the road towards macritchie reservior. Nonetheless, so i took the torch from bravo gary, and i start running. And i knew i was gone soon. I sprinted from the start! Ok now, don't laugh, especially those who were there. I knew it didn't look like a sprint as compared to those birds (who seemed to fly) like tony. I ran past mount alvernia hospital, the condo, over the bridge over braddell road, and god remembers what, and was wondering where the hell was the next stop. It seemed so faarr....so faarr... i wanna diee diee die... So much for not running for a long time. Serves me right. And finally i saw my saviour: the next mb290 in sight! And with each stride i took, it felt heavier yet happier too. Happier that finally i could get rid of that heavy and stupid looking torch that looked like an axe if you held it the wrong way. Nonetheless, the leg ended and i climbed into the mb, feeling all hot and numby.
When we finally got to dieppe barracks, 'coincidentally' all three runners met there. Finally, the torches were handed to the respective s3s to move off towards chong pang, and finally handed over to the brigade commanders. Oh, what a wonder chereography of a perfect ending! Fantastic. When we, poor and hungry and sleepy runners, were finally allowed to head back to camp, the mass run has already commenced. Thank goodness. I spot many people as they ran the final lap around camp! They include the likes of the following: S3, CO, RSM, Cpt Garrick in that order. So now you know if Mr G could run. =) Nonetheless, i found eric and accompanied him on the last round around camp, as well as chatter nonstop about the relay while he was busy catching his breath which seems to be like 20 steps in front of him at any one time.
I went to take over the armskote from 2lt mark; that blur chap was rudely awakened by me, opened the key press to give me the key, then went back to sleep. I had to rudely awaken him the second time round to ask him to give me the armskote. "... ... ..." And after that to go back to parade square in my no. 4 to look for the platoon. Only to make myself look super outstanding while everyone else is in uniform. And during the flag raising ceremony, s2 mentioned that we should charge the flag poles and the mynahs. Give them ten days in db each. And i agree. For making a helluva noise during flag raise. Imagine adding a constant high E to accompany the duration of the national anthem. As well as the occasionally squarking of the birds at awkward moments during the anthems. Some birdbrains should teach those creatures a thing or two about basic music theory. At least the theory, please.
Breakfast was unavailable, and i learnt something new: the canteen is open from 7am onwards! Wow! You mean i could actually have my breakfast before first parade! But there a catch, drinks are not provided, so please bring your own coffee to the canteen. Thank you.
The poor sleepy me conked out on my spring mattress after issuing one rifle to yizhong for the national day parade rehearsal. So tired, i overslept and woke up at 9.07am instead of nine. Thankfully no one bothered to hunt for me. I continued packing the crates for maple flag, only to realize that many many things are not easily found when you need them. And for christ's sake, i hereby demand that every unit should have at least ten extension cables held by the qm stores. Somehow. How can anyone forget those! Grrrr.
Ok, i've been rattling on this post for almost an hour. I'm tired of being tired. Zzzzz.
