[ 331: Prelims Day 7: Physics Prac ]
Quarantine was fun... actually. I must be kidding right? No... me and carl were happily listening to praise and worship music... yeah, and joking about me going around collecting 'offering' (handphones) before the exam... haha... and about blasting praise and worship music in the lt. lol. Talking about the lt, it's noisy as... fish market. This (i guess) is the only time where we can legally make noise and teachers have no say over it. Haah. And we spent the last 45 mins trying to solve a mechanics question. Try this:
A uniform rod AB, of mass m and length 2a, rests at an angle 30deg to rough horiontal ground with the end A in contact with the ground. Equilibrium is maintained by a light elastic string, of natural length 3a and modulus mg, attached to B. The string passdes over a smooth fixed peg C, which is at a height 3a above the ground, and the other end of the string is dixed to the point D on the gorund with D vertically below C. The points A, B, C and D lie in the asme vertical plane. The part BC of the string makes an angle * with the vertical.
(i) Show that BC = 2a sec* and hence find, by using Hooke's Law, the tension in the string in terms of m, g and *. [3]
(ii)Show that tan * = (root3)/4 [5]
(i) is easy... (ii) is the challenge that kept us 45 mins. =) (One darn thing about blogger is that any abstract symbols don't show properly.)
Then went up to airport to study with shawnie... looks like we are going to spend lotsa time studying together... ;-) That includes tomorrow. yeah. Gonna help him in math... =)
